Union City, Tenn.–Members of the Union City High School cross county team got a hero’s send-off from fellow students this morning as they exited the hallways of the school on their way to the state meet in Nashville.
Union City will be making its third consecutive trip in the team portion of the event Saturday at 2:35 p.m. at Percy Warner State Park. The Tornadoes, who won the Region 7 championship last week, finished 18th and 7th previously at the state meet.
UCHS girls’ runner Kaitlyn Lamb, who qualified for the state in her first attempt with a Top 6 regional finish, will be unable to participate due to a broken ankle that is now in a cast.
Lamb was thought to have only a sprain suffered in practice before the region performance, but a post-race X-ray revealed a broken bone. She is making the trip to cheer on her teammates Saturday.
A drum line made the way Friday morning for UC runners to receive well-wishes from their classmates and teachers. The group then made its way down the hallways of the middle and elementary schools before departing for Nashville, where they were to make a practice run on the Percy Warner course this afternoon.
