Henry County Sheriff’s Office Press Release – On 11-15-19, Henry County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Gary Vandiver responded to Henry School in reference to a complaint about a teacher’s assistant having inappropriate contact with a minor. During the investigation Jaylon Bennett (19 years of age) of 1013 Depot St. was brought to the Sheriff’s Office for questioning. Afterwards, he was charged with sexual exploitation of a minor by electronic means. Stewart County Investigators were also called in reference to another incident involving Bennett and another child on the bus as it traveled through Dover. Stewart County charges are pending as to that incident. Bennett is scheduled to appear in Henry County General Sessions Court on 11-19-19. He is being held on $100,000 bond.
In addition to the Press Release, Henry County School System Director Dr. Leah Watkins issued a statement –
“The safety and security of our students is of the utmost importance. As such, matters such as this will be investigated quickly, thoroughly and resolved in a manner most supportive and safe for our students. The expectation of the system is that our employees will perform their duties professionally and with the best interest of the students in mind. Today, we have encountered a rare occurrence where the judgement used by one of our staff members was unacceptable. This is heartbreaking and intolerable and has been addressed swiftly and severely by the school system and the Sheriff’s Office.”
