Mansfield, Tenn.- A brush fire that got out of control on Wednesday afternoon had the Mansfield Fire Department busy from 2:24 pm when the first call came in, until about 10 pm and ending up burning about three acres and destroying the historic former Mansfield Academy School building.
Assistant Chief Darren Webb said the fire spread from a woman burning trash in a burn barrel. The wind was blowing so much the fire spread quickly and the old school building was engulfed in flames, Webb said.
Webb said his dad, Wayne Webb, a local historian and firefighter himself, figured the building to be built in either 1934 or 1935. The Division of Forestry along with nine fire fighters from Mansfield continuously went to the scene Wednesday after the fire rekindled a couple times.
