Union City, Tenn.–Finishing a story paid off nicely for a pair of Union City Middle School students.
Eighth-graders Jordan Cannon and Bailey Wagoner each earned cash prizes for completing a narrative as part of the Obion County Prevention Coalition Narrative Essay Competition.
The OCPC – which promoted creating a healthy and safe drug-free Obion County – asked students to help in working with them to educate and inspire young people to live drug-free healthy lives.
The organization’s theme for this year’s writing contest was “Send a Message Stay Drug Free.”
Students were given part of a narrative about a girl who snuck out of her house, went to a party and ended up dying. They were then assigned to finish the story and detail how the girl died.
Cannon earned first place in the contest and was presented $50. Wagoner got $30 for placing second.
The competition was voluntary, and it was open to both UC Schools students and Obion County students.
“The kids were really excited about participating and we had around 10 or 12 from our school to enter the contest,” UC 8th-grade ELA teacher Renee Hempel claimed. “I thought they all did very well and were creative in how they finished the narrative.”
