UC Cheerleaders On Way To Orlando

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Union City, Tenn.– The Union City High School cheerleading squad received its second bid to the UCA National Cheerleading Championships in Orlando, Fla., in as many weeks with a “no deductions” performance in Birmingham, Ala., last weekend.

The Purple and Gold contingent — which competed in the large Varsity Game Day Division — also increased its overall performance score from its previous competition at Brentwood High School by several points.

Union City received high scores in components which included:

A 4.7 out of 5 in Crowd Leading Effectiveness and Execution.

A 4.7 out of 5 in Band Chant Material and Effectiveness.

A 4.6 out of 5 in Game Day Visual Appeal.

“Those scores just show how hard work is paying off for the girls and how we are improving every day,” UCHS cheer coach Halle Kennedy said. “The girls worked so hard in the week leading up to the Birmingham competition as they had to make adjustments to our routine because one of our athletes was in a car accident.

“The girls adapted so well, just two days before the competition, and had their best performance. In fact, we were one of the few squads to not have any deductions or falls – which was a huge success in itself.”

The large field of competitive squads attracted 49 teams that competed in various Game Day divisions.

“Game Day is such a fun division to compete in because we literally get to brag on our school and show everyone our love and spirit for UCHS,” Kennedy continued. “It’s exciting to bring different aspects of our school heritage, including our fight song, with such energy to the floor.

“I’m so proud of these girls for representing Union City so well. It was so great to see all the parents that came to support our girls and have them cheering along. We are blessed with such a great support system from the parents, as well as our school system and community.”

Union City will be performing twice more in the coming weeks, first in the Cheer Extreme Showcase at South Fulton, along with other local teams, on Dec. 8th. The squad’s last competition will be at the Bootheel Classic in Cape Girardeau, Mo., Dec. 15th.
