Springville, Tenn.–An over 100-year-old barn in Henry County was destroyed by fire early this morning by lightning.
Oakland Volunteer Fire Chief James Martin told WENK/WTPR the department was dispatched at 2:10 a.m. on a report of a barn fire at 2305 Manleyville Road.
Martin said upon arrival, firefighters found the barn about 20 percent involved. “Two minutes after our arrival, the barn was completely engulfed and the roof had collapsed,” he said. Martin said, “It was started by lightning best we could tell.”
The owner Curt Barrett told firefighters that the barn and contents inside were over 100 years old.
The Oakland Department received mutual aid from the Springville Volunteer Fire Department. Oakland dispatched three trucks and seven firefighters, while Springville responded with two trucks and six firefighters.
