UC Cheer Squad Close Season With First Place

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Union City, Tenn.–The Union City High School cheerleading squad truly saved its best for last.

Competing Sunday in the Bootheel Classic Regional in Cape Girardeau, Mo., the Tornado cheer team won first place overall in its final competition of the season.

The effort completed a year that saw UC return to the competitive scene with earlier standout showings in the Tennessee Extreme Regional Competition at Brentwood High School and the South Schools Championships in Birmingham, Ala., in which the Purple and Gold earned berths in the UCA Nationals in Orlando, Fla.

In Sunday’s season finale, Union City competed in the Game Day Varsity Division.

And the squad – led by seniors Briley Coffee, Emma Collins, Caroline Conley, Leah Beth Faulkner and Haley Thomas – jumped for joy in unison when it they were announced as overall champions of the event.

“With this being Union City’s first year to compete in the Game Day Division — which is different than the traditional competition routines they have competed with in the past — it is an unbelievable accomplishment to end the competition season with winning first place,” said Destiny Flood, one of four coaches of the UC unit.

“The girls really had to get out of their comfort zone this year with competing in the Game Day Division and they made it look so effortless. The routines in the Game Day Division focus on the same elements that we strive to bring to the football and basketball games, crowd-leading energy and school spirit.

“And ending our competition season with such a huge success would not have been possible without the leadership of our five seniors. They have been positive role models on the mat, providing encouragement and support for the younger team members.”

Flood – who shares coaching/sponsor duties with Halle Kennedy, Teka Kennedy and Kim Sherwood — also lauded the ability of squad members to successfully juggle multiple commitments as most of them are additionally involved in other extracurricular activities while also maintaining high academic standards.

“Our girls excel in many other fields, and that’s what makes this more impressive,” Flood continued. “We have been so impressed with their work ethic.

“Their ability to excel at several different activities, while still maintaining superb grades, is truly amazing.”

Members of the squad in addition to the seniors were Macie Atkins, Julianne Becton, Nicole Bone, Talea Buford, Kamia Cross, Kaigan Davis, Alyssa Durham, Reagan Durkee, Angel Edwards, Amber Finch, Ashlyn Floyd, Laken Prather, Emma Ross, Yolanda Sims, Raegan Taylor and Annie Wade.
