Paris, Tenn.–At the first of two back-to-back work sessions Monday, the Henry County Schools board of education discussed how to give back by donating their stipends back to the school district.
After much discussion, it was decided that a portion would be put aside for a student scholarship, and a portion to the system’s Read to be Ready program.
Director of Schools Dr. Leah Watkins will be reviewing proposed criteria for the board scholarship and will get back with the board with a recommendation.
Board member Tom Beasley noted, “Teachers are the heart of our program. We want to encourage them to excel.” The Read to be Ready program was funded by the state last year to encourage literacy in the district. It was widely regarded as a huge success but unfortunately the state is no longer funding it, so the board is going to assist where they can in this endeavor.
After the session, Dr. Watkins took board members on a tour of the high school to show them the progress of the construction to date.
The second work session was called for a discussion of needed improvements at the high school football field and the pros and cons of synthetic turf versus natural grass. An article on that work session was published on our website Monday night.
