Paris, Tenn.–It was an emotional day at Henry County High School as the 2020 Seniors picked up their caps and gowns from a drive-through pick-up in front of the building to maintain social distancing.
Staff members were on hand for the drive-through, waving signs and cheering the seniors. The teachers and other staff members were limited, also to allow for social distancing, with four shifts of staff rotating to allow more to participate.
The students also received special gifts as they drove through the circle drive in front of the school. “It was emotional,” High School Principal Dr. Michele Webb said, “but it was a really good day.”
Family and Consumer Science Teacher Judy Cunningham wore a cap and gown and Science Teacher John Anderson brought his dog Murray, who was dressed in a sign honoring the Class of 2020.
Head Football Coach James Counce hand-delivered the navy sports coats that are given to senior players by the Quarterback Club every year.
FFA Advisor Laura Moss delivered balloons to each FFA student.
Dr. Webb said staff also handed out “You Matter’ cards and a letter “telling them how much they matter to us. This is the third year for our You Matter campaign.”
Class of 2020 member Allie Elliott and her grandmother Nancy started the campaign when Allie was a sophomore and sponsor buying the cards each year, Webb said. “It is a national campaign to take time to tell others they matter to you. This year, Allie and Nancy also purchased ink pens for the senior class that have You Matter on them.”
Each student today received a baggie with five You Matter cards in them. Webb said, “The students are encouraged to share them with those who matter to them. We encourage them to decorate them, write a note on them, mail them, or hold on to them until they see the people who matter to them…whatever works best for them.”
