UCES Students Finish Project Despite COVID-19

Union City, Tenn.–The ongoing coronavirus pandemic didn’t keep one determined group of Union City Elementary School students from completing an extensive class project.

Clarissa Youngblood’s third-grade Advanced ELA class actually thrived amid the distance learning tactics put into place when traditional school dismissed March 19 due to COVID-19.

The group completed an interactive learning experience in a unit of CKLA called “The Viking Age.” Students were taken on a quest where they landed in a new place in Viking settlement history during each lesson. The quest started at Finland and stopped in Greenland, Iceland and England before arriving in Norway.

The class was then assigned a project to make a 3-D model of a Viking Longship from that era.

Students were also directed to write an informative essay about Viking Longships and took photos of their finished model projects – both models and essays — submitting them to Mrs. Youngblood.

“They put in some hard work despite not being in a physical classroom and I was really pleased with what they were able to build and showcase,” the UCES teacher said. “I’m really proud of all they put into the project, especially amid this time of crisis.”
