McKenzie, Tenn.–The Bethel Wildcats didn’t have to travel far in signing their latest standout. The Cats signed Jonathan (Jon) Turner of South Gibson High School Friday. Jon is the son of Robert and Shelby Turner of Medina, Tennessee and will major in Electrical Engineering.
Turner helped lead the Hornets to the 13AA District and 13AA District Tournament titles this past season. The Hornets advanced to three straight state sectional appearances during his prep career. Jon was the 13 AA District MVP and 13AA Tournament MVP. He was also a member of the 7AA All-Region All-Tournament squad. Turner was named to the TSWA All-State Class AA team.
A member of the Hornet 1,000 Point Club, Turner finished with 1, 069 points, 636 rebounds and 82 blocks in his SGHS career.
The 6’9 Turner led South Gibson to their first district title ever this past year averaging 18.7 points and 10.3 rebounds. Jon shot a blistering 67 percent from the field. He shot 69 percent from the free throw line and 70 percent from three-point range.
Turner was an honors student each year and will graduate with honors.
He feels his biggest strengths are his ability and willingness to learn and be coachable.
Hornet Coach Mark Wilkins commented on Turner’s signing. “Jon is one of the best players we’ve ever had in our program. He’s a tremendously hard worker and has great character. We look forward to seeing him excel at Bethel University.”
Bethel Coach Jeff Britt commented, “I am very pleased to have Jon join our program and university. He has worked hard to this point and I am looking forward to seeing him develop the next four years. He has great skills and size on top of being an outstanding young man.”
