Paris, Tenn.–Paris Mayor Carlton Gerrell has announced his candidacy for the office of Henry County Mayor.

Long-time County Mayor Brent Greer on Monday night announced he is retiring before his term is over. His resignation will be effective on or before November 3. Greer has served as County Mayor for 22 years and said his decision followed ‘thoughtful consideration and meaningful prayers.’

Gerrell and his wife, Norma, moved to Paris over 25 years ago and raised their family here. He serves as a pastor and administrator at the Tennessee Valley Community Church. He has served 10 years on Paris City Commission and is into his fourth term as Mayor, serves on the Paris-Henry County Chamber board, the local planning commission and has been active in numerous community activities and committees.

The following is Gerrell’s formal statement announcing his candidacy:

“Over the years I have been asked why I chose to run for political office, whether as a city commissioner or as a City Mayor.  I suppose it’s a fair question as I don’t consider myself a “politician” in the conventional sense.  I’ve never sought the limelight or added publicity.  I am open and honest about my position to all that ask.  I don’t see political office as a stepping stone to increased personal wealth or social standing.  The truth is that I love my community and I am dedicated to the residents who make Henry County the great place it is.  I firmly believe our county is home to the best people in the state.

“While I have been planning this for some time, Mayor Greer’s early announcement will allow the opportunity to serve sooner.  And I didn’t expect the calls and messages from residents asking me to run for county office.  This outpouring of support and my continued desire to serve the people of this county has prompted me to announce my candidacy for County Mayor.

“Service to others has been a driving force throughout my life.  After moving here more than 25 years ago, with my wife Norma, I saw that this desire to serve was also ingrained in the people of Henry County.  I witnessed selfless contribution and charitable acts between residents which inspired me to serve in a greater capacity.  I have worked with youth as a Tennessee Promise mentor and a Scoutmaster, I served God and my parishioners as a pastor and administrator, for 20 years I worked hard to assist my customers in private business, and as a 4 term Mayor I believe I have faithfully served the people of Paris.  As County Mayor, I believe I can continue to build on Mayor Greer’s legacy of economic prosperity, community service, and personal growth.

“As a long-time resident and elected official of Paris, I understand the importance of local, organic growth.  During my tenure as Mayor, I have had the opportunity to assist in growing our local economy.  I worked with city and county commissioners to bring higher education to the area, to develop new industrial property, and grow existing industry.  As County Mayor I would continue with a focus on building our small businesses, increasing local workforce education opportunities, improving infrastructure necessary for economic development, and protecting our existing assets.”

Former State Rep. Tim Wirgau earlier announced his candidacy for County Mayor.
