The 2020 fall sports season for Union City Schools teams and athletes is set, according to a Tuesday news release.
At least for now.
UC High School will field squads in cross country, football, golf and volleyball, while the Middle School will participate in cross country, football and softball in what proves to be a fluid time for every school activity in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.
Gov. Bill Lee gave clearance for “close contact” sports to begin preseason preparations in earnest when he signed Executive Order 55 late Friday afternoon, allowing football and girls’ soccer to join the list of other fall sports.
The UCHS golf teams will be the first begin play, with scheduled matches Tuesday vs. South Fulton at the Fulton Country Club and then Thursday when they host the Red Devil teams at Poplar Meadows Country Club. Those competitions are slated to begin at 4 p.m.
Both the Lady Tornado volleyball team and the UCHS cross country squads have their first competitions scheduled for Aug. 18 – the volleyball team hosting Westview at 5 p.m., and the cross country entries running at Dresden at 4:30 p.m.
On the middle school level, the Union City softball team will open its campaign Aug. 10 at Black Oak. The Lady Tornadoes will play their first home game the following day, hosting South Fulton.
Both the UCMS football and cross country teams will begin their respective seasons on Aug. 20 – the Purple and Gold gridders playing at Dyersburg and the Twister runners competing at Dresden.
