Paris, Tenn.–A Paris woman faces several charges after Monday evening’s three-vehicle collision in downtown Paris.
Paris Police Investigator Jeramye Whitaker said charges of evading arrest, aggravated assault, drug paraphernalia, and simple possession are pending against Rachael Young, age 35, of Paris, which began as a traffic stop on Chickasaw Rd.
Young is being held in the Henry County Jail without bond pending the filing of the new charges. Warrants for her arrest were already on file on charges of possession with intent, unlawful possession of a weapon and drug paraphernalia possession when the accident occurred.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol released its report of the crash this afternoon.
As RadioNWTN previously reported, the incident began when Whitaker attempted to stop Young on Chickasaw Road at 5:40 p.m. Young accelerated at ‘unsafe speeds’ onto India Road, Whitaker said, at which point he terminated the pursuit because of her unsafe driving.
At that point, Whitaker continued on India Road and saw the vehicle coming back towards him. According to the Paris Police press release issued Monday evening, Young nearly hit Whitaker head-on intentionally and Whitaker again began pursuing the vehicle again due to the aggravated assault on the officer.
Whitaker gave pursuit on India Road to Chickasaw Road. When he reached Chickasaw Road he observed the driver to be driving in an unsafe manor on Chickasaw Road again. Whitaker then terminated the pursuit.
A short time later City Units observed the Buick on Washington Street. The driver of the Buick again almost hit another officer head-on, along with another vehicle, but no pursuit was initiated. The accident occurred a short time later, Young fled the scene on foot and was caught in the downtown Paris area.
According to the THP report, Young was driving a 2007 Volkswagen sedan, westbound on Washington Street. A 2013 GMC Terrain driven by Bonnie Williams, age 48, of Paris, was southbound on N. Market St. when the collision occurred at the intersection of Washington and N. Market Streets. Meanwhile, Benjamin Monck, age 52, of Paris, was sitting in his 2004 Dodge SXT at the red light on Washington, facing eastbound as the other two vehicles traveled west and struck his vehicle.
According to the THP, all the parties, including Young were wearing seatbelts. A 13-year-old passenger in Williams’ vehicle also was wearing a seatbelt.
