Paris, Tenn.—Former State Rep. Tim Wirgau of Paris has filed paperwork with the Henry County Elections Commission seeking to run for Henry County Mayor as an Independent at the November 3 election.
Meanwhile, Shaun Poole of Paris also submitted his paperwork as an Independent candidate for the Mayor’s position, but has indicated on his Facebook page that he will be challenging the law requiring that candidates for County Mayor be at least 25 years old. Poole is 22.
Poole said he will be attending Monday’s meeting of the County Election Commission to challenge that law. The Election Commission will meet at 4:30 p.m. Monday at its offices at 215 Grove Blvd (former Weston Hall). Purpose of the meeting is to confirm candidates for the November 3 ballot.
At Saturday morning’s Henry County Republican Caucus, Wirgau was nominated as a candidate but declined the nomination.
Other candidates for County Mayor—both of whom already announced and submitted paperwork—are Tennessee College of Applied Technology Vice President John Penn Ridgeway, running as an Independent; and Paris City Mayor Carlton Gerrell, who was nominated as the Republican candidate at Saturday’s caucus.
Candidates for Henry County Sheriff are Damon Lowe, who already submitted paperwork as an Independent, and Josh Frey, who was nominated as the Republican candidate at Saturday’s caucus.
Wednesday was the deadline for submitting paperwork to run for County Mayor and County Sheriff as Independents. The deadline for withdrawing as candidates is noon Saturday, September 12.
