Dover, TN – A pavement resurfacing project of Fort Donelson National Battlefield roadways and parking areas in Dover will resume the week of September 21.
National park roadways will be resurfaced between September 21 and 25, with contractors applying a new “micro-seal” to one-lane at a time. Signage and traffic flaggers will provide direction around specific areas being treated.
During the project, drivers are asked to exercise increased safety awareness for road crews and related lane closures. Brief traffic delays are possible, especially on more heavily traveled park roadways, such as Cedar Street and Natcor Drive.
For a longer-lasting pavement, parking areas require more cure time before returning to use. As currently scheduled, temporary closure to vehicle access of the following paved areas are:
- Parking area and access road for the picnic area and comfort station will be closed to vehicle access Tuesday, September 22, reopening on Thursday, September 24.
- Visitor Center Parking area will be closed to vehicle access Wednesday, September 23, reopening on Friday, September 25. Limited parking will be available in bus/RV parking parallel to the main park road.
- Dover Hotel/“Surrender House” Parking area will be closed to vehicle access Monday, September 21, reopening on Wednesday, September 23.
- Tour Stop 3 “Log Hut” Parking area will be closed Wednesday, September 23, reopening on Friday, September 25.
- The portion of the Fort Donelson National Cemetery Drive extending from the main cemetery parking area to the back cul-de-sac will be closed for treatment Monday, September 21, reopening on Wednesday, September 23.
- National Cemetery Drive, extending southward to Church Street, will close to vehicle traffic at 3:00pm on Wednesday, September 23, to permit for increased safety while paving the narrow roadway. Vehicle access will resume the following morning. During the brief road closure, pedestrian access from Plantation Drive, parallel to the national cemetery access, is available.
Once underway, updates or modifications to project information or scheduling will be posted to the national park’s website at: www.nps.gov/fodo and its Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/fortdonelsonnps/
