There’s truly strength in numbers.
The Union City High School girls’ tennis team used quality depth up and down its lineup to defeat Trinity Christian Academy 4-3 Monday afternoon at the Middle School Courts.
Freshmen Shelby Bondurant and Molly Kizer along with senior Erin Gill gave the Lady Tornadoes critical wins at the Nos. 3, 4 and 5 seeds before Gill and Gracyn Callicott won at the No. 1 doubles slot to secure the victory. Bondurant was playing in her first match of the season, and both she and Gill recorded 8-4 wins, while Kizer triumphed 8-5.
UC improved to 2-1 with the win.
The Tornado boys were not as fortunate, falling 4-0 to the Lions.
The doubles tandem of Eli Ervin and Charlton Wisener put up a good fight in the top doubles match before falling 8-5. UC won no more than two games in any singles match.
Today’s girls-only home match against Greenfield has been moved to Wednesday because of a rainy forecast. Both Union City teams will be in action Thursday at Gibson County.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL
UC 10, Gibson Co. 2
The Lady Tornadoes rolled to their fourth win in as many starts this spring, a four-run first inning starting a string of tallies in each of the first five frames.
Sophie Theobald homered and drove in three runs, Bailey Decker went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and an RBI, and Kaitlyn Lamb knocked in two runs to pace the Union City offense.
Anna Lynn Cheatham improved to 3-0 as she fanned six and allowed just two hits in 4 2/3 innings. Theobald finished up in the pitching circle, striking out three in 2 1/3 frames.
Union City is scheduled to play at Lake County today at 5 p.m.
HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL
UC 5-2, Bradford 1-3
Dalton Bone was sharp for the second time in as many outings, scattering four singles and giving up just one unearned run in a distance-going Game 1 pitching gem for the Tornadoes.
Bone struck out seven and walked just one while throwing 85 pitches to keep his earned run average at 0.00 in 14 innings this spring.
Chase Norton, Mason Reed, Will Ragsdale and Gabriel Qualls all had two hits apiece to support Bone offensively. Reed had the lone extra-base hit in the contest, a double.
Landon Hauhe scored twice, while Norton, Ragdale, Qualls and Hauhe all drove in runs.
Union City dropped the nightcap, falling to 3-3 overall and suffering its first District 13A loss in four games.
Bradford scored all its runs in the fourth inning, erasing a 2-0 deficit, then held on for the doubleheader split.
The Twisters threatened in their final bat but hit into a game-ending double play with both the tying and go-ahead runners aboard.
Bone reached base three times with two singles and a walk, while Gunnar Cheatham doubled and scored. UC managed just five hits in all.
Reed (1-1) went all the way on the hill and was tagged with the defeat. He whiffed four and allowed six hits and two earned runs.
Union City will face Milan Wednesday at 6:45 p.m. in the first round of the Final Flight Classic.
MIDDLE SCHOOL BASEBALL
Dyersburg 4-4, UC 2-1
The Tornadoes came up short in both ends of a home twinbill against D’burg, falling to 7-6 on the season.
In the opener, UC could muster but two hits — one by Logan Dawkins, the other by Cohen Simpson. Dawkins also knocked in a run, while Kirben Thompson had the Twisters’ other RBI.
Tucker Davis scored both Union City runs.
Dawkins pitched well but was tagged with the loss. He allowed just three hits and struck out five in 3 2/3 innings.
UC managed minimal offense in Game 2, also getting just four hits.
Logan Vincent, Jack Harris, Jamarious Abbott and Davis all singled for the Tornadoes, who scored their only run (Vincent) in the third.
Four errors led to three Dyersburg runs and saddled Vincent with the pitching loss. He fanned four and allowed five hits.
Union City will play at University School of Jackson on Thursday.
MIDDLE SCHOOL TENNIS
Top seed Ben Wade was the lone winner for the Union City Middle School squad against a tough bunch from McCracken County as the Tornado squads finally opened their season after a couple of delays.
Wade cruised to an 8-1 win in his singles match.
Wade and Landon McAdams did win four games in their doubles match, falling 8-4. Logan Barker also managed four games in his singles match for UC.
Emma Mobbs put up a good fight in her singles match for the Lady Tornadoes, claiming four games in an 8-4 setback.
