By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Union City, Tenn.–A pitching gem on the high school diamond, a thrilling rally in middle school baseball and a rare two-match-win for the Union City High School girls’ tennis team highlighted Monday’s spring sports results for Tornado entries.

The UCMS girls’ tennis and soccer teams were also triumphant in close contests.

The following is a recap of all Union City results:

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

UC 4, Greenfield 0

Dalton Bone spun a three-hit shutout and the Tornadoes improved to 7-1 in District 13A and 10-10-1 in all games.

Bone improved to 5-1 with his second shutout of the season. The senior southpaw threw 87 pitches, striking out five and not allowing a walk.

Kyler Southerland stole home to account for UC’s first run in the third. Mason Reed had a RBI single in the fifth and Gabriel Qualls laced a two-run single for some insurance in the sixth.

Will Ragsdale and Gannon Searcy both doubled for the Tornadoes, while both Qualls and Chase Norton went 2-for-4 for the victors.

The two teams play again today at Greenfield.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BASEBALL

UC 5, TCA 4

Down 4-0, Union City rallied to beat Trinity Christian Academy with the tying and game-winning runs coming in the Tornadoes’ final at-bat in the sixth.

Harrison Durkee’s double scored Tayehari Jones to even the count at 4-4 before Cohen Simpson raced home with the deciding tally on an error.

Copeland Chism also doubled and knocked in a run, while Jack Harris had a RBI single for the Purple and Gold.

UC (12-9) scored seven bases in the contest.

Logan Dawkins came on in relief of Harris in the fifth and pitched two perfect frames to get credit for the victory. Harris gave up three earned runs in four innings.

Game 2 of the two-game series between the teams is scheduled for today in Jackson at 5:30 p.m.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

Hickman Co. 3, UC 2

The Lady Tornadoes could manage but three hits and dropped a low-scoring decision to their Kentucky neighbor who improved to 10-1.

Union City is now 10-6 heading into today’s home doubleheader against Westview.

Anna Lynn Cheatham had two of the Twisters’ three safeties. Sara Ullrich and Sophie Theobald drove in the UC runs.
