Union City, Tenn.–A pitching gem on the high school diamond, a thrilling rally in middle school baseball and a rare two-match-win for the Union City High School girls’ tennis team highlighted Monday’s spring sports results for Tornado entries.
The UCMS girls’ tennis and soccer teams were also triumphant in close contests.
The following is a recap of all Union City results:
HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL
UC 4, Greenfield 0
Dalton Bone spun a three-hit shutout and the Tornadoes improved to 7-1 in District 13A and 10-10-1 in all games.
Bone improved to 5-1 with his second shutout of the season. The senior southpaw threw 87 pitches, striking out five and not allowing a walk.
Kyler Southerland stole home to account for UC’s first run in the third. Mason Reed had a RBI single in the fifth and Gabriel Qualls laced a two-run single for some insurance in the sixth.
Will Ragsdale and Gannon Searcy both doubled for the Tornadoes, while both Qualls and Chase Norton went 2-for-4 for the victors.
The two teams play again today at Greenfield.
MIDDLE SCHOOL BASEBALL
UC 5, TCA 4
Down 4-0, Union City rallied to beat Trinity Christian Academy with the tying and game-winning runs coming in the Tornadoes’ final at-bat in the sixth.
Harrison Durkee’s double scored Tayehari Jones to even the count at 4-4 before Cohen Simpson raced home with the deciding tally on an error.
Copeland Chism also doubled and knocked in a run, while Jack Harris had a RBI single for the Purple and Gold.
UC (12-9) scored seven bases in the contest.
Logan Dawkins came on in relief of Harris in the fifth and pitched two perfect frames to get credit for the victory. Harris gave up three earned runs in four innings.
Game 2 of the two-game series between the teams is scheduled for today in Jackson at 5:30 p.m.
HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL
Hickman Co. 3, UC 2
The Lady Tornadoes could manage but three hits and dropped a low-scoring decision to their Kentucky neighbor who improved to 10-1.
Union City is now 10-6 heading into today’s home doubleheader against Westview.
Anna Lynn Cheatham had two of the Twisters’ three safeties. Sara Ullrich and Sophie Theobald drove in the UC runs.
Theobald was saddled with the pitching loss despite giving up just two earned runs and four hits. She struck out six.
The Lady Tornadoes fanned 10 times.
HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS
UC 7, Greenfield 0 (G)
UC 6, Westview 1 (G)
UC 5, Westview 2 (B)
The Union City girls claimed a unique “double win” as they split their squad into two teams and convincingly beat both Greenfield and Westview to improve to 10-4.
Seeds 1-6 played at G’field and swept the Yellowjackets (7-0), while Nos. 7-12 rolled past Martin (6-1) with several strong performances.
Madison Adams, Allie Tucker and Madeline Underwood dominated their singles opponents against Westview and Kate Schlager and Emily Fields joined in the victory parade in doubles play.
Against Greenfield, the doubles tandems of Molly Kizer/Mimi Jenkins and Shelby Bondurant/Annie Wade punctuated the shutout victory with 6-0 verdicts.
The UC boys squared their mark at 4-4 with a 5-2 victory over the Chargers.
Eli Ervin and Charleton Wisener won in both singles and doubles play, while Alex Del-Castillo and Gavin Pledge both rolled to impressive 8-0 triumphs.
A busy week will continue for Union City’s two teams today when the Tornadoes host Gibson County.

Lexi Petty avenged a singles loss to the same opponent from Friday’s match and Davey Frankum won in both singles and doubles play for the Union City girls.
Addy Rice was dominant (6-0) in her singles match.
The Tornado boys fell in a close encounter after beating TCA on Friday in team competition.
Ben Wade continued to mow down the competition in singles play, winning again 6-0.
Wade and Landon McAdams recorded a 6-2 triumph in doubles.
Union City will play its final home match next Monday, hosting McCracken County at 4 p.m.
