UC Kindergartners Counting Their Chicks As They Hatch

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Union City, Tenn.–A class of kindergartners at Union City Elementary School are counting their chicks as the eggs hatch.

Jessica Graham’s students are in the midst of completing an annual study on the egg-to-chicken evolution and have watched that process come to life with the hatching of eggs in the classroom.

The class previously discussed the life cycle and different types of chickens. Students also kept a journal of the period from when the eggs were put in an incubator and when they began to hatch 21 days later.

The newborn chicks make their temporary home in a trough and under a heat lamp for warmth.

Graham received a dozen eggs from UCES educational assistant Joan Slusser, who will take the chicks to her farm after a period of a few weeks.
