Union City, Tenn.–The Girls District 14A Small Division Tennis Championships have had a definite Purple and Gold theme.
The Union City doubles team of Shelby Bondurant and Annie Wade won an All-Lady Tornado championship round Wednesday, while UC junior Gracyn Callicott advanced to today’s singles title match at the Union City Middle School Courts.
Bondurant and Wade bested their freshman teammates, Molly Kizer and Mimi Jenkins, in a hard-fought final, 6-2, 7-5. Both teams will now move on to regional play May 17-18.
They’ll be joined at the next level by Callicott, who’ll advance regardless of how she does in her championship match today against Greenfield’s Maura Shelton at 4 p.m.
Both UC doubles teams sailed easily into Wednesday’s finale, overwhelming tandems from Greenfield, Gibson County and Peabody.
The same was true for Callicott, who lost just one game in two matches and blitzed Channing Covington of Westview 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals.
Greenfield’s Shelton kept the singles championship from being another battle between Lady Tornadoes as she stopped UC’s Erin Gill 6-4, 6-4. Gill had earlier blanked Peabody’s Brodie McDaniels 8-0.
The Tornado boys put up a good fight in both singles and doubles before dropping two matches in both singles and doubles in the semifinals.
Alex Del-Castillo and Kobe Terrell both won first-round matches before bowing out in the Final 4. Terrell was forced to retire due to excessive cramping, while Del-Castillo came up short vs. Westview’s Leo Brown (3-6, 1-6).
The Union City doubles teams of Gavin Pledge/Eli Ervin and Charleton Wisener/Owen Rodgers fought gamely into the semis before dropping three-set matches. Each Tornado duo won easily in the quarterfinals, 8-0 and 8-2, respectively.
