martin-library-sneak-peek

Martin, Tenn.–It was a big day Sunday as donors for the new Martin Public Library were given a sneak peek. Over $1,710,000 was donated by 1,000 people for the new library.
Official opening date will be announced soon. On Sunday, the new stage held about 400 donors. Gathered in front of the new library were alumni of Martin High School. MHS alumni gave over $660,000 dollars. The front entrance of the library was named the MHS Alumni Entrance.
The new two-story library will include many features, such as the Tennessee History Room, Genealogy Room, Board Meeting Room, Computer Classroom and more. The new library is expected to increase shelving capacity to over 58,870 books and other materials. The West and South Leisure Reading Areas will flank the Book Stacks.
Here is a snapshot of some of the features:
TENNESSEE HISTORY ROOM – This space is the repository for rare books, local history books and papers as well as the works of local authors. It also serves as a quiet reading area featuring a gas/electric log fireplace and a quiet reading nook in the corner of the room.
GENEALOGY ROOM – This space excites the many individuals who enjoy researching their family histories. Worktables will be present to encourage group interaction. The room contains a microfilm reader and a public access computer for research purposes. Finally, the room contains file cabinets that are available for family records and the Weakley County Historical and Genealogical Society records.
COMPUTER CLASSROOM LAB – The computer lab provides a dedicated space for a range of training for patrons who either do not know how to use the computer or want to sharpen their skills. It also provides a place to hold digital workshops and private training for businesses and government offices. The room is equipped with a large screen, smart TV and special software to enable the instructor to assist students from the front of the class. The room also doubles as an overflow public access computer room when classes are not in session.
ONLINE COMPUTER CENTER – The Internet and access to affordable computers have transformed the world, as we know it. Still there are many patrons that lack access to reliable high-speed internet because of either financial or geographical limitations. Of all households in Weakley County, 39.5% do not have broadband and 18.3 % do not have a computer. Having a robust Computer Center with high-speed internet, office productivity tools, and basic editing software gives the library the opportunity to provide the public with the ultimate equalizer and enhances the lives of many in our community.
The Martin Public LIbrary Foundation completed a very successful Pave the Way brick campaign with sales totaling 503 pavers. Foundation Vice President, Larry Snider and member Misty Menees led the effort that provided nearly $60,000 in revenue to the library. This made a great impact on the equipment that could be purchased for the library.
