UCMS Softball Continues Winning Ways

Union City, Tenn.–Sarah Beth Byars doubled twice and drove in three runs to lead Union City to a 9-4 middle school softball victory over visiting Gibson County Tuesday.

The win was the Lady Tornadoes’ third straight and fifth in their last six outings as they improved to 8-3 on the season.

Byars reached base four times in all as UC put up five runs in the second inning and never looked back.

Gracie Simms tripled and scored, Emma Mobbs crossed the plate twice, and Breanna McLendon singled and scored to aid the Twister cause.

Addison Carr pitched around six walks and combined with Mattie Smith for a no-hitter. Carr struck out six, while Smith got the final out of the game in relief.

Union City will play next at Dyersburg on Thursday.

Tornado teams compete in Patriot Classic

Union City tuned up for its own invitational on Thursday by participating in the annual Patriot Classic at Paris Landing Tuesday.

The Lady Tornadoes placed sixth out of 10 teams in the 18-hole event, finishing with a 203.

Mimi Jenkins shot 100 and Molly Kizer finished with a 103. Allie Kate Frilling carded a 118.

Trinity Christian Academy won the team competition with a 156 total.

The UC boys competed against seven other teams and a handful of individuals, shooting a 377.

Nolan Chandler had the top Tornado scorecard with a 90. Landon Hauhe came in with a 93 and Cameron Thompson registered a 94. Reese Paschall shot 100 and Carter Watts ended up with a 111.

Dickson County had the best team score with a 301 as Cam Tankersley shot 67 to lead the way.

Thursday’s UC-hosted tourney at Poplar Meadows will also be an 18-hole event and will begin at noon.

Ripley 3, UC 0

The Lady Tornadoes put up a good fight in Games 2 and 3, falling 25-20 and 25-21 after dropping the opener 25-12.

UC is now 4-4 overall and 4-2 in district play.

Annie Wade had nine digs and six saves in Tuesday’s non-league setback. Raegan Taylor had eight saves, six digs and five assists, while Sara Ullrich finished with six saves and six digs. Emma Powell recorded 10 assists and five saves.

Kaigan Davis registered seven kills and three digs and Anna Cheatham had six kills, five digs and five saves.

Head coach Jessica Graham noted her team’s resolve while fighting to the last point and singled out Davis, Wade and Ullrich for their individual play.

Union City hosts West Carroll on Thursday.
