Union City, Tenn.–The Union City High School boys’ golf team secured a berth in the regional tournament with a runner-up finish in District 13A Monday.
The Tornadoes (390) finished second only to South Fulton (369) at Persimmon Hills in Sharon. McKenzie (412) will join UC and the Red Devils as the third team to qualify for the Region 7A event, which will be played next Monday in Sharon.
Nolan Chandler shot an 84 to finish third in the individual competition and pace Union City. Chandler was 2-over (39) on the front nine, posting a birdie and five pars.
Landon Hauhe carded a 90 (48-42) for the Twisters, while Reese Paschall finished with a 98. Cameron Thompson rounded out the UC scoring with a 118.
Westview’s Luke Stephenson was the tournament medalist with a 75.
The Union City girls’ team will compete in the district today, teeing off this morning at 8 o’clock.
HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL
UC 3, Lake County 0
The Lady Tornadoes “aced” Senior Night, recording 39 service winners to better their district record to 8-3 and move to 8-5 in all matches.
Annie Wade had a dozen aces to pace Union City with teammate Emma Powell just one behind that total. Powell also had seven assists. Anna Cheatham logged nine aces and had nine kills.
Kaigan Davis recorded six kills for the winners.
Wade, Cheatham, Davis, Raegan Taylor and Sara Ullrich were honored in Senior Night festivities before the contest.
UC is back in action at home this evening, hosting Ripley.
MIDDLE SCHOOL SOFTBALL
UC 22, South Fulton 4
Jenna Kate Cross homered and Addison Carr had three hits, scored four times and drove in four runs to help the Lady Tornadoes rout SF.
Sarah Beth Byars also had three singles and scored four runs for Union City, while Madie Theobald collected a pair of hits and plated four tallies. Clare Atwill crossed the plate four times.
Breanna McLendon had a big day with three hits and four runs scored, while Mattie Smith and Allie Vincent were good for two hits and a pair of RBI apiece.
The Lady Tornadoes pounded out 19 hits in all and committed just one error in the contest in improving to 11-6.
Union City welcomes Martin to Graham Park today at 5 p.m.
