UC Students See Themselves “Inside & Out” During Study

Union City, Tenn.–First graders at Union City Elementary School learned many things about themselves and each other during a recent study of the human body.

Students in the classes of Jessica Flood, Jennifer Durham and Carrie Willis explored and made several discoveries about their bodies in a two-part domain that also included short-term and long-term care and maintenance.

The first half of the study introduced students to and allowed them to explore their bodies. They gained knowledge of fundamental body parts and functions of the five major systems: skeletal, muscular, digestive, circulatory and nervous.

The second part of the domain focused on care and maintenance of the human body. Students learned how germs could cause disease and were taught how to help stop the spread of germs.

Five keys to good health – eating well, exercising, good sleep habits, cleanliness, and regular checkups – were also emphasized.

The daily lessons concluded with teachers providing students with the rudimentary tasks necessary to develop and maintain healthy habits.

“The students really enjoyed this domain,” the teachers all agreed. “They soak up information like a sponge and hands-on activities are a great reinforcement to the lessons.

“And they’ve really enjoyed sharing what they learned in the study.”
