Union City, Tenn.–Saturday night was a really good night for Sophie Theobald.
After she and teammate Amari Bonds carried Union City to a 46-40 overtime upset of Henry County, the Lady Tornado senior guard was crowned Homecoming Queen at halftime of the boys’ game at Marty Sisco Gymnasium.
Theobald hit 7-of-8 free throws in the fourth quarter and OT, finishing with 14 points to help UC (13-6) avenge an earlier 24-point loss to the Triple-A Lady Patriots (13-7).
Bonds hit for a game-best 29 points as she and Theobald combined for all but three of the Lady Twisters’ markers.
The remainder of the court included Senior Princesses Khia German and Ramiyah Kerney, Junior Princess Reagan Durkee, Sophomore Princess Jermyia Bonds, and Freshman Princess Kennedi Robinson.
Union City’s boys dropped a 53-42 decision in the nightcap despite a game-high 24 points from Malaki Brooks.
Meanwhile, UC’s two middle school entries split games in the Blue Suede Invitational at South Gibson County High School in Medina Saturday.
The Lady Tornadoes moved into the tourney semifinals, where they’ll face top seed Dyersburg with a 33-23 victory over Huntingdon.
However, the Twister boys saw their season end in a 36-28 loss vs. Huntingdon.
HIGH SCHOOL
UC 46, HC 40, OT (G)
The Lady Tornadoes outscored Henry County 8-2 in the extra session, with Theobald perfect on four free throw tries.
The contest was close throughout, with UC down 11-10 after one quarter, up 28-26 at the half, and still ahead 33-31 after three. It was 38-all at the end of regulation.
Bonds had 13 of her 21 first-half points in the second period for Union City.
The Twister girls hit 18-of-22 from the charity stripe in all, with Theobald sinking 9-of-10 and Bonds making 8-of-10.
HC 53, UC 42 (B)
The Patriots used a 20-11 fourth quarter to pull away from Union City in what was a two-point game (33-31), entering the final eight minutes.
The Tornadoes (7-13) were up 14-7 after one and tied with HC at 23-all at the intermission.
Brooks had 13 points and hit three of his five 3-pointers in the first half.
C.J. Davis scored eight points to follow Brooks in the UC scorebook.
MIDDLE SCHOOL
UC 33, Huntingdon 23 (G)
Union City held slim one-point leads at the end of the first two quarters before outscoring the Fillies 17-8 in the second half to improve to 15-6.
Sh’Nyla Moss led a balanced scoring attack for the winners with 10 points, while Clare Atwill tallied nine and Sarah Beth Byars scored eight. Alli McMillan finished with six.
UC will play in either the championship or consolation game on Saturday – depending on the result of tonight’s contest.
Huntingdon 36, UC 28 (B)
The loss of leading score James Turner in the first quarter due to a wrist injury and a plethora of turnovers doomed the Tornado boys.
UC (9-12) still held a 28-26 lead going into the fourth quarter before being outscored 10-0 down the stretch.
The Twisters were up 14-8 at the first-quarter horn and 21-17 at halftime.
Trey Pitts led Union City with 12 points and Zak Summers scored nine – all on 3-pointers.
