Weakley County, Tenn.–The Weakley County Sheriff’s Office has released more details on the discovery of the body of Virginia Emerson, who had been missing since December.

Mrs. Emerson was 73 and from Clinton, Ky. and had been reported missing around December 11-12. The Kentucky State Police had issued missing persons reports on her which had been published by area media.

Weakley County Sheriff’s Capt. Marty Plunk said on Monday, January 24, 2022, the Sheriff’s Office 911 Center received a call requesting that a Deputy respond to an area located in Austin Springs, an area in the northern part of the county near the Kentucky-Tennessee state line.

A vehicle had been located in a field, several hundred yards from the road and not visible from the road, in a cut soybean field. The 911 caller reported that a body was in the vehicle.

Upon arrival of Investigator Neil Cantrell arrival, he located the vehicle in the field and confirmed that a body was in the vehicle. At this time, Capt. Marty Plunk, Weakley Co. Sheriff’s Office and Inv. Cantrell were able to identify the person located in the vehicle as Mrs. Virginia Emerson.

Kentucky State Police was notified that Mrs. Emerson had been located. Agents with the Kentucky State Police did respond to the scene as well.

Personnel with the Weakley County Ambulance Service and the Weakley County Rescue Squad were able to remove Mrs. Emersons remains from the vehicle and the remains were sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Nashville for autopsy. Those results are still pending at this time.

Capt. Plunk said this is still an active investigation and anyone who may have had contact with Mrs. Emerson or may have seen her in her 2014 Ford Fusion, black in color, is urged to contact Capt. Marty Plunk or Inv. Neil Cantrell at the Weakley County Sheriff’s Office.
