
Paris, Tenn.–The Henry County Middle School Speech Team traveled to Lexington, KY
recently and competed in the SCAPA Bluegrass “Animated Speakers”
Middle School Tournament.
SCAPA is a private school for the performing
arts in Kentucky. The Henry County Middle School team competed against six of Kentucky’s best middle school
programs and came back with a 1st place tournament championship for
the team and several individual accolades.
This was the team’s 3rd first place tournament win this year, also placing first at Collierville and Murray.
HCMS had 17 finalists in eight categories and several placing just outside the
top 6 in their events.

In Broadcasting – Anna Jo Wardlaw 6th and Jacob Hobson 5th
In Declamation – Hobson 4th, Maple Townsend 2nd and Timothy Tyler 1st
In Duo Acting – Ella Hutson and Abby Bush 1st
In Impromptu Speaking – Joshua Lancaster 4th, Shelby Fertig 5th and
Tyler 6th
In Improvisational Duo – Lancaster and Townsend 3rd
In Poetry Interpretation – Wardlaw 4th and Hannah Frederick 7th
In Prose Interpretation – Wardlaw 2nd, Allie Paschall 3rd, Tyler 4th, Lane
Snow 6th and Sealya Chadwell 7th
In Storytelling – Lancaster 4th
HCMS has been completing virtually for two years and this was only the
third in-person contest this year out of 10. The team is comprised of
students from 5-8th grades at Harrelson, Henry and Lakewood Schools.
They are coached by Teacher David Weatherly.
