Union City, Tenn.–Spooks and goblins had no place in the annual first-grade musical at Union City Elementary School.

Instead, around 140 students from seven classes displayed fun costumes and celebrated Halloween’s “silly side” in a program led by UCES music teacher Katie Tohn earlier this week.

The group performed several songs for fellow students, family, and friends during three different gatherings that drew between 2,500 and 3,000 people combined to the school gymnasium.

Tohn said she and the students spent a couple of months practicing for the program, which included several tongue twisters and considerable fun energy and costumes.

“It really was just celebrating the silly side of Halloween instead of having a scary theme,” she said. “It’s been the tradition at UCES for first-graders to perform in October, and we wanted to focus on silly creatures, candy, and fun.

“The students really enjoyed it and, by all appearances, so did everyone who came to see the show.”
