HIGH SCHOOL TRACK

Union City’s girls’ track team ran away from a large field to win the first of five home track meets this season Thursday.

Nineteen teams were entered in the event, and the Lady Tornadoes easily outdistanced them all with 115.5 total points. Crockett County was second with 60 points.

The UC boys were runners-up, narrowly edged by Covington 62.5-59.

The Lady Twisters’ 4X100 relay team set a school record with a mark of 51.73 to place second in a talented competition. Nakyah Yarbrough, Indeya Hogsett, Aujani Moss, and Katana Bonds made up the Union City unit.

Bonds claimed first-place honors in the long jump and triple jump, while Ca’Lae Ervin was second in the high jump. Debrionna Jones finished No. 2 in the discus, and Bailey Wagoner was second in the two-mile run.

Another UCHS program mark fell in the high jump, as Adrian Crawford cleared 6’4” to win first place. Crawford had just returned to town with the Tornado basketball team from the state tournament and set the record with little preparation.

Kameron Shade won the 100 meters for the other Union City boys’ highlight.

“It was a good meet for us,” UC head coach Wade Maddox said. “Our girls’ sprinters gave a really good effort, and our quality depth was obvious.”

Union City will compete at Huntingdon on Thursday.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Westview 6, UC 3

Union City outhit Martin 9-2 but gave up nine walks and committed two errors that led to its first loss of the 2024 season Friday.

UC stranded 10 baserunners in the contest.

Barrett Cox tripled, singled, scored a run, and drove in another for the Tornadoes. Tucker Davis went 2-for-3 with a run, Will Ragsdale tripled and had an RBI, and Copeland Chism singled and scored.

Kyler Southerland came on in relief of starter Logan Dawkins and tossed five steady innings while permitting one earned run. Southerland struck out four. Dawkins allowed one hit and three earned runs and was charged with the pitching loss.

Graves Co. 8, UC 1

The Tornadoes were limited to three hits in a Saturday morning loss to GC in Mayfield.

Cox singled home Davis in the third for UC’s lone run. Copeland Chism had the Twisters’ only other safety.

Freshman Ben Howell allowed five runs in four innings in his first high school start. He fanned three and did not walk a batter.

Sam Jones gave up three runs in three innings of relief.

Union City (2-2) has postponed its Monday game against Gleason due to cold temperatures and will play a doubleheader against the Bulldogs at Elam Stadium on Tuesday, with Game 1 beginning at 4:30 p.m.
