Paris, Tenn.–Another good day for Paris Rotary Club Scholarships Thursday as David Flowers, chairman of the Rotary Scholarship program, introduced two students as winners of the Barbara Muzzall, Rotary Club Heritage scholarship and the continuation of the Mr. Bob Richardson Scholarship.
The Richardson Scholarship is a $10,000 per year scholarship awarded to a deserving Henry County High School graduate desiring to continue their education in the medical profession.
Jamie Underwood McClain, who received the award three years ago, continues for a fourth year. A graduate of Memphis State University she is now enrolled at UT Martin working on her Masters Degree. Jamie majored in psychology with concentration on Behavioral Neuro Science and is continuing her masters work in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Jamie is the daughter of Chris and Mistie Underwood and wife of Jackson McClain. She has continued a 4.0 cumulative grade average throughout her career.
Richardson family members were in attendance for the presentation again this year including Randy Richardson grandson of Mr Bob Richardson along with, Susan Horn and Dawn Richardson, wife of Dr. Bo Richardson. Before presenting the scholarship, David Flowers reminded those in attendance of the great effort begun by Dr. Bobby Richardson as a Rotarian in 1997. During that year, “The Polio Foundation was founded and our club raised $26000.”
Later Dr. Richardson would become a noted heart surgeon, performing the first heart transplant in Memphis years ago. Dr. Richardson established the Richardson Family Henry County Educational Foundation Scholarship beginning with $104,000. After thirty eight awards through the years to eleven different students, that 104,000 has continued to grow to $241,000. The scholarship can be renewed for an additional three years after first being awarded. Jamie is completing her fourth year.
Kolby England, son of Joseph and Francine England received the $1000 Barbara Muzzall, Rotary Club Heritage scholarship. Kolby is a member of the Henry County Band and plans on continuing his education at Tennessee Tech in Cookville and major in Civil Engineering.
