The Union City High School Marching Band will truly be coming off a ‘high note’ when it competes in the state championship this weekend.

The Purple People – who’ll compete in the Division II event at Stewarts Creek High School in Smyrna on Saturday – wrapped up the preliminary portion of their competition season in the Crockett County Marching Invitational last Saturday.

And the final ‘tune-up’ couldn’t have gone any better.

For the fourth time in as many competitions this fall, UC claimed first place in its class against other bands of its size. The Tornadoes also won first in percussion and second in drum major in its division.

“What an outstanding accomplishment for our kids!” Director Jason Deem claimed. “To be able to say that we won every time out when we competed against bands of similar or the same size is just a remarkable accomplishment.”

Union City more than held its own against everyone else, too, winning first place in guard and percussion, and placing second in band in the overall competition. The Twisters were fourth in the drum major category.

“Our performances this weekend were a testament to our students’ hard work and dedication,” Deem added. “We made some major improvements during practice last week and executed at a high level with our show on Saturday.

“I’m looking forward to seeing how we do this weekend at our state competition.”

The Marching Tornadoes are scheduled to take the field Saturday at 3:19 p.m.
