The Tennessee Comptroller’s Office has marked an important milestone in its fight against fraud, waste, and abuse. The Comptroller’s Division of Investigations, established in 2016, recently issued its 500th investigative report detailing cases of financial wrongdoing across the state.
These 500 investigations have uncovered $51 million in fraud, waste, and abuse involving public funds and assets. The investigations have also resulted in nearly 1,600 criminal charges against individuals accused of violating the public’s trust.

“These reports represent more than numbers, they reflect our commitment to accountability and transparency in Tennessee government,” said Comptroller Jason Mumpower. “Every investigation is a step toward protecting taxpayer money, strengthening internal controls, and ensuring that public funds are used responsibly and ethically.”

The Division of Investigations partners with law enforcement, prosecutors, auditors, and local officials to identify and address financial wrongdoing. Each investigative report details findings of mismanagement or misuse of public resources, providing both the public and government leaders with valuable insight into how to prevent similar issues in the future.

In recognition of International Fraud Awareness Week (November 16–22, 2025), the Comptroller’s Office will be raising awareness about fraud prevention and the work of the Division of Investigations on its social media channels.

“We encourage every Tennessean to be alert to the warning signs of fraud in government and to speak up when something doesn’t seem right,” added Comptroller Mumpower. “Together, we can help ensure that public money is spent responsibly and transparently.”
