Tennessee SNAP benefits are changing in 2026 with a new rule restricting sugary drinks and candy, effective July 31, 2026, as part of a USDA waiver allowing the state to exclude items where sugar or corn syrup is a primary ingredient, while also expanding options for hot, prepared foods like rotisserie chicken; meanwhile, existing work requirements for Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWDs) with time limits remain, requiring 80 hours/month of work/training to maintain benefits.
Key Changes Effective July 31, 2026 (Pilot Program)
- Banned Items: Sodas, energy drinks, candy, and other foods where sugar, corn syrup, or similar sweeteners are among the first ingredients will no longer be eligible for purchase with SNAP benefits.
- Permitted Items: The waiver allows SNAP recipients to buy hot, prepared foods, such as rotisserie chicken, which were previously restricted.
- How It Works: The electronic benefit system will automatically decline these restricted items at checkout; no new cards are needed.
ABAWD Work Requirements (Ongoing)
- Who: Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ages 18-64).
- Requirement: Must work, volunteer, or participate in a qualifying training program for at least 80 hours per month (20 hours/week).
- Time Limit: Benefits can be limited to 3 months in a 3-year period if the requirement isn’t met.
