Union City, Tenn.–At Tuesday evening’s meeting of the Union City City Council, it was approved that fireworks can be sold and shot off in the city limits.

For the first time, fireworks can be sold inside the city limits. It requires a $50 permit to set up a fireworks stand. A fireworks tent can operate from June 20 through July 5 and again December 21 through January 2.

Mayor Terry Hailey said a $2 million liability insurance policy is required naming the City as additional insured. Mobile vendors and flashing signs are prohibited. It also makes it legal to shoot fireworks in the city limits between 6PM and 10:30PM on July 3rd and all day until 11:30PM on July 4. And also 8pm till 1AM on December 31st and January 1.

He said, “It’s illegal to sell fireworks to kids under 16 or to anyone who is intoxicated. It’s illegal to to ignite fireworks near schools, churches, hopitals or similar facilities. Or to throw fireworks at vehicles, people or on to property without permission.”

Council approved the purchase of three Cushman Hauler Carts for Parks/Recreation/Turf at $10,767 each. Then they gave Parks/Recreation/Turf the go ahead to solicit bids to lease eight Zero-Turn Mowers. “We’re actually replacing 10 zero-turns with 8 which will save some funds.”

Council appointed Becky Biehslich as an alternate administrative hearing officer. This officer hears cases involving code violations. We passed on first reading an ordinance amending the building code of the City of UC. “It doesn’t change anything. It simply brings us up to date with the State’s Energy Code 2018. As I said, no change in its application to our Code Department.”

Council approved $22,420 to buy an auxiliary radio system as a backup to the main one. Departments with 350 calls or more per year are required to maintain a backup radio system.

“We approved $10,000 as our one third share of purchasing two new HVAC systems for the Fair Association. The County pays two thirds or $20,000. We approved a contract with Harold Coffee Construction of Hickman in the amount of $704,750 for work on a road and a gravel pad in the Industrial Park. This is all paid for with a grant. No City funds are involved.

And, Council heard a report from Jon Davidson from Planning and Code who said we had a good year. $14 million in new building permits. 150 new permits issued including four at over $1 Million. There were 400 mowing violations and 80% of those then complied. 116 property maintenance violations for junk and trash. 52 inoperable vehicles. 13 condemnations.
