By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Mattie Smith tossed a complete-game four-hitter to help Union City softball break into the District 14-AA win column with a 5-2 victory over visiting Gibson County on Thursday.

Smith struck out five, walked just two, and wiggled out of a sixth-inning jam as the Lady Tornadoes (3-7 overall) won for the first time in three league games.

UC’s offense benefited from nine walks and scored twice in both the second and sixth innings.

Smith and Annalece Morton each doubled to account for the Twisters’ two extra-base hits, while Averi Riley and Whitley Jenkins both walked twice and scored. Addison Carr singled, scored, and drove in an insurance run in the sixth, while Hadley Smith added a sacrifice fly.

Union City will return to action on Tuesday, playing at Peabody in another District 14-AA game.

HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS

The Lady Twisters had beaten Camden 4-3 in an earlier meeting.

Union City’s boys (9-1, 7-0) nearly duplicated their earlier 7-0 whitewash of the Lions, losing just one match – that in a tiebreaker.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BASEBALL

UC 9, Trenton 4

The Tornadoes erupted for five tallies in the fourth to erase a one-run deficit and avenged a loss three nights earlier against Trenton.

Union City (4-7) pounded out 10 hits with Angel Tinajero carrying the big stick with three singles, two runs scored, and a pair of RBIs. Winning pitcher Kason Medley also contributed at the plate with a triple and a single that chased home three runs, while Sam Bailey went 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of runs scored.

Chance Williams scored twice, and Brody Fields reached base three times for the victors.

Boston Riley was credited with a save with three solid innings of relief work after the Twisters took the lead. Medley and Riley combined to fan six Bear batters while giving up just three earned runs and five hits.

UC will next play host to Greenfield on Tuesday.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

JCS 10, UC 0

The young Tornadoes are still looking for consistency after dropping another mercy-rule contest in Jackson and falling to 2-10.

Jack Theobald had both of Union City’s two hits. Jackson Huffstutter was the Twisters’ only other baserunner after being hit by a pitch.

Jackson Vowell was charged with the pitching loss, though just three of the Eagles’ eight runs scored against him were earned. UC was guilty of four errors in the game.

The Tornadoes are scheduled to play at St. Mary’s today at 5:30 p.m.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SOCCER

Paris Inman 8, UC 0

Union City got off just one shot on goal – that by Aaron Lopez – in a contest that was halted late in the second half due to the mercy rule.

PI scored four times in each half.

Michael Vallee had five saves in goal for the Tornadoes, who are now 1-5.

UC will play again on Tuesday at Fulton County.
