PARIS, TN — In a ceremony at Henry County High School’s Patriot Field, filled with nostalgia and community pride, the Henry County School System honored longtime youth coach Doug Summers with a banner and a plaque on the Wall of Excellence at HCHS.
Nominated by Mark and Wes Archer the banner and Wall of Excellence honor the enduring legacy of a man who dedicated four decades to the development of student-athletes. During the ceremony, Summers’ family were presented a commemorative banner, which will hang at the baseball field for the remainder of the season as a tribute to his service.
Doug Summers’ coaching journey began in 1975, sparking a volunteer career that spanned 40 years until his retirement from the sidelines in 2015. While he coached youth basketball and football, he was most notably recognized for his presence on the baseball diamond.
Summers was defined by his deep love for the game and an unwavering commitment to the young men he mentored. Known for his grit and wit, he was famous among locals for his immense heart—and his legendary, lifelong “disagreement” with the strike zone of almost every umpire he encountered.
“He loved the game and he loved his players,” the family shared. “He just never cared much for the umpires.”
Born on October 14, 1943, and passing on August 26, 2016, Summers remains a cornerstone of the Paris community. His legacy continues through his family, many of whom were present for the unveiling:
His wife is Mary Lynn Summers and sons are Scott Summers, Stan Summers, and Steve (Windy) Summers, all of Paris; and Dustin Summers of Chattanooga. Grandchildren are Shelby Lynn Summers, Carson Douglas Summers, Mary Grace Summers, and Jack Summers.
The Wall of Excellence serves to recognize individuals whose contributions have left an indelible mark on the Henry County School System. With 40 years of volunteer service, Doug Summers’ impact on generations of athletes ensures his place among the county’s most influential figures.
