Paris, Tenn.–A large crowd of animal-lovers were on hand Thursday morning for the dedication of the new Shirley Newman Play Yard at the Paris-Henry County Animal Shelter.
The Play Yard is a fenced, covered, artificial turf space made possible through a generous donation from Newman. The area provides a safe environment for animals to play, exercise, and it’s a boon for adoptions.
Mayor Kathy Ray issued a proclamation honoring Newman as a 2026 Humane Heart Recipient. “Shirley Newman’s commitment to animal welfare reflects the highest ideals of community spirit, kindness, and service,” she said.
City Manager Kim Foster praised the work that Animal Control Officer Zack Braham and his staff have been doing in building the shelter into what it is now. “He continues to bring great ideas and new ideas to the table,” she said. “And he’s developed a lot of great partners for the shelter.”
Braham said the job “is something I never dreamed I would have” and noted how much he appreciates the support of the city and work of the staff. He also praised Newman for making his vision of a Play Yard for the animals at the shelter possible.
Jessica Krueger of the Best Friends organization provided a timeline of its involvement in the local shelter and noted how the opportunities there have grown over the years.
The shelter is located at 445 Recycling Dr., Paris, 731 642 5024.
