No Matter The Schedule, Free Breakfasts Available To All UC Students

free-breakfast-1

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Union City, Tenn.–Free breakfast will be available to every Union City Schools student this year – no matter the class schedule.

Students at UC High School will join those at both the elementary and middle schools in receiving that service for the 2020-21 school year.

Union City Schools will begin classes for this year on Monday with an abbreviated schedule before going to a hybrid Level 3 plan Aug. 24.

In that plan, PreK-4th grade will attend classes on campus spread over all of the UC Schools buildings. Grades 5-12 will be on a plan that will include two days in-person and two days online instruction at home each week for UC Middle School students (grades 5-8) and one day in-person and three days online instruction at home for UC High School students.

When students are present at the high school, they will be served breakfast each morning at 7:15 in the Commons Area. Students at UCES and UCMS will continue to eat in their respective classrooms when school is in regular session.

Breakfast and lunch will be available for both Distance Learners and Virtual Learners each day as well.

  • For Distance Learners who’ve signed up for that service, meals can be picked up each day at 1 p.m. at the back door of their respective schools’ cafeteria. Signs will be posted at those locations. Meals include breakfast and lunch for that day.

  • For Virtual Learners on the days they are not receiving in-person instruction, meals are to be picked up on those days at 1 p.m. at the back door of their respective schools’ cafeteria. Signs will be posted at those locations. Meals will include breakfast and lunch for that day.

“We want all our parents to encourage their children to take advantage of this service,” UC Schools Food Services Director Nan Tilghman said. “Starting every day off right with a great breakfast is so important, especially during challenging times.

“This is a great opportunity to do that.”

Lunches will no longer all be free for everyone as they were during the executive closure.

Normal qualification status is back in effect, and qualification statuses are as follows:

  • Free
  • Reduced
  • Paying

Parents are encouraged to fill out their child’s application for free/reduced as soon as possible and submit those forms to their respective schools. The applications were included in every students’ registration packet.

If a letter of qualification is received in the mail, however, a new application is not necessary.
