Union City, Tenn.–Union City spring sports teams got the weekend off to a great start with wins in high school softball, baseball, soccer and a sweep in middle school tennis Friday.
The following is a recap of those Tornado triumphs:
HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL
UC 8, SF 7
A six-run uprising in the fifth inning erased a five-run deficit and propelled the Lady Tornadoes past longtime rival South Fulton.
The rally gave Union City (10-5, 8-0) sole possession of first place in District 13A.
A pair of SF errors aided the Lady Tornado comeback, but Sara Ullrich’s hit plated the tying run. The eventual game-deciding tally scored on a Lady Red Devil misplay.
Sophie Theobald doubled, singled, scored twice and drove in a run for UC. Both Emmaline Qualls and Bailey Decker drove in a pair of runs, and Bayleigh Long had a pair of hits — including a double — for the victors.
Theobald got the final five outs, fanning three, to pick up the pitching win in relief of starter Anna Lynn Cheatham.
Union City will play at Hickman County today, before hosting Westview for a doubleheader on Tuesday.
HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL
UC 2, Hickman Co. 0
Barrett Cox threw a five-hit gem with six strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings and Tornadoes pushed across a pair of runs in the fifth for the only scoring of the game.
UC’s first run scored on a HC error before Will Rasdale drove in an insurance run with a single.
Dalton Bone came on in relief of Cox and got a strikeout with two runners in scoring position and then ended the game with a fly ball to centerfielder Kyler Southerland for the Twisters (9-10-1).
Union City managed just three hits in the contest, Bone and Mason Reed joining Ragsdale with singles.
The Tornadoes will play Greenfield at home today at 5:30 p.m.
HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER
UC 9, Ripley 0
Miguel Sanchez had a career day with four goals and an assist as Union City won its third straight with a runaway victory over Ripley.
Sanchez found the net on his first two shots of the match and three times in all in the first half when the Tornadoes (5-2) stormed to a 5-0 lead. Sanchez then scored on his initial shot on goal after the intermission.
Both Isaac Mack and Logan Elmore scored two times and had an assist for the Twisters.
Juan Lopez was credited with a pair of assists and Riley Caudill had a goal and an assist to aid in the winning cause.
Union City will play at Ripley today.
