Union City, Tenn.–Maddie Smith tripled, doubled and drove in five runs to lead Union City to a 6-3 victory over visiting Trenton in middle school softball Tuesday at Graham Park.

Smith’s bases-loaded two-bagger gave the Lady Tornadoes a 4-2 lead in the third, and UC went on to win for the fourth time in six games.

Clare Atwill and Addison Carr both singled twice and scored two runs for the Twisters, who tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the fifth.

Carr struck out eight and allowed only two earned runs and four hits to improve to 3-1 with the pitching victory.

Union City was scheduled to play Dyersburg in a second game Tuesday, but that contest was canceled.

The Lady Tornadoes will visit Gibson County Thursday.

Though the Lady Tornadoes lost in Paris (25-15, 25-21, 25-17), head coach Jessica Graham was well-pleased with her team’s effort against the Class 3A Patriots.

“It was the best we’ve played this season,” Graham said after her squad fell to 2-2 with the non-district loss. “The communication, the hustle and the determination were all there. A few of our errors is what got the best of us, but we did not give up without a fight.”

Emma Powell was solid in several phases with nine aces, nine assists, seven digs and four saves for UC. Anna Lynn Cheatham served up seven aces and was responsible for eight kills, while Raegan Taylor handed out six assists and had five digs.

Sara Ullrich came up with nine digs and Reagan Taylor finished with six assists, five digs and three kills. Annie Wade had five digs and five saves.

Cheatham, Wade and Long all drew praise from Graham for their efforts.

Union City will host Peabody Thursday in district play, jayvee play beginning at 5 p.m.
