Union City, Tenn.–The 2021-22 season openers for Union City High School basketball couldn’t have gone much better.

The Tornado teams swept Peabody in Tuesday’s Hall of Champions opener at Trenton, winning the girls’ opener 59-41 and then the boys’ nightcap 89-69.

Amari Bonds poured in a game-high 26 points to pace the UC girls to their victory, while sophomore guard Malaki Brooks lit up the Tide with a magnificent 42-point performance for the Purple and Gold in the nightcap.

Bonds had 24 of her markers over the first three periods and made a trio of 3-pointers along with 9-of-9 from the free throw line in Game 1.

Kia German tossed in 10 points to the winning cause, and Sophie Theobald hit for nine for a Lady Tornado squad that sank 17-of-21 from the charity stripe.

The Twisters took control immediately with an 18-5 first quarter. It was 33-17 at halftime and Union City had doubled up the host, 48-24, after three periods.

All 14 players to suit up for UC played in the contest.

Brooks was simply unstoppable in the boys’ game and dueled personally with Peabody’s Jason Hunt, who finished with a game-high 45 points.

Brooks’ stellar effort included a 15-point first quarter and 17 points in the third period. He sank 17-of-21 from the foul line and hit four of the Tornadoes’ nine 3-pointers.

D.J. Robinson and Ben Kail joined Brooks in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Kail and DeAngelo Monroe both knocked down a pair of triples.

Union City – using effective fullcourt pressure – stormed to a 28-13 first-quarter lead and never looked back. The Tornadoes were up by double digits, 42-32, at the half and led 65-54 heading into the fourth stanza.

Peabody dressed just seven players in the contest due to the school’s football team’s involvement in the state playoffs.

A second Hall of Champions date awaits Union City Saturday with the girls playing at McKenzie at 11:30 and the boys visiting Gleason at 7.

The Tornado teams open the home portion of their schedule next Tuesday against Trinity Christian Academy.
