UC Tennis, Baseball, Track Impressive In Spring Sports

Union City, Tenn.–Union City’s two middle school tennis squads easily rolled over Dyersburg for the second time this season Monday afternoon.

The Lady Tornadoes won 10 of their 11 matches against the visitors, highlighted by Marley Waddell’s 6-5 comeback triumph. Waddell had trailed 4-1 earlier in the match.

Emma Mobbs won in shutout fashion (6-0), while Bertie Jenkins, Josie Ross and Blythe Ogden cruised to 6-1 victories. Three of UC’s four doubles teams also won 6-1.

The Tornado boys dominated in their top three singles matches with Landon McAdams, Jeremy Rice, and Grant Sinclair all winning 6-0.

Foster Rodgers’ 6-5 triumph rounded out Union City’s 4-1 victory.

Both UC squads are 3-1 heading into Thursday’s home match against Trinity Christian Academy.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BASEBALL

UC 13, Obion Co. 0

The Tornadoes scored in every inning – highlighted by a six-run second frame – to roll over Obion County.

Owen Waggoner went 3-for-3 with three runs scored for UC (3-8), while Sam Jones had two hits, including a double, and drove in three runs.

Harrison Durkee and Kendyn Moss each had a pair of hits, with Durkee scoring twice and Moss credited with two RBIs. Byron Abbott had a big day with a double, two runs scored and three ribbies, while Haydon Toon and Kirben Thompson both scored twice.

Thompson and Ben Howell combined on the four-hit shutout and had nine strikeouts between them.

The two teams will play again today at 5:30 at Thompson Field in Graham Park.

MIDDLE SCHOOL TRACK

UC boys win at D’burg

The Union City boys edged Northview (52-48) to claim first place in a three-team event at Dyersburg Monday.

Cooper Javellana (discus) and Shontorius Fuller (100 meters) had first-place individual showings, while three different relay teams claimed honors for the Tornadoes.

On the girls’ side, UC was second in the team standings – just behind the host team (59-53).

Ca’Lae Ervin had big day with first-place finishes in both the high jump and 100-meter hurdles. Chloe Hubbard won the 100 meters race and Breanna McLendon led the field in the 800-meter run.

The Tornado teams will compete in Dyersburg again on Thursday.

The Tornado teams put up a good fight against another strong non-district opponent before dropping both matches in Kentucky.

Twin sisters Davy and Dani Frankum won their respective singles matches, then teamed to beat Frannie Hidey and Maggie Rowton 8-3 in doubles play. The doubles tandem of Gracyn Callicott and Molly Kizer was also victorious at the No. 2 seed.

Charleton Wisener and Alex Del Castillo were singles winners for the UC boys, the two notching a second triumph when they beat Alex McMillian and Blain Oliver in a close 9-7 doubles match.

Union City is now 4-5 in boys’ play and 2-6 on the girls’ side.

The Lady Tornadoes host Greenfield in a girls-only match today.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Westview 3, UC 0

 

Union City dropped its district opener and fell to 4-4 overall at Elam Stadium.

The Tornadoes left the bases loaded in the sixth and brought the tying runner to the plate in the seventh but could not push across a run either time.

Union City fanned 10 times in the contest – nine of those vs. Westview starter Luke Beam in six innings.

Landon Hauhe’s double represented UC’s lone extra-base hit of the contest. Hauhe also reached base a second time via a walk. Skylar Hall went 2-for-4 for the Twisters.

Hauhe (0-2) pitched well, striking out five and allowing just seven hits in the complete-game defeat.

The two teams will meet again today at 4:30 in Martin with a jayvee contest to follow.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

Huntingdon 13, UC 0

 

The Lady Tornadoes managed only a single by Alli Kate Frilling in suffering a big home District 12-AA loss to Huntingdon.

UC (7-5, 0-2) struck out a dozen times and committed four errors against a Fillies squad that pounded out 17 hits and scored in every inning but one.

Frilling reached base twice with the aforementioned hit and a walk. Emmaline Qualls and Sophie Theobald were the only other Lady Tornadoes to get aboard, each reaching via a walk.

Anna Cheatham was the losing hurler, giving up eight runs while pitching into the fourth. Theobald was charged with five runs in a two-inning relief stint.

Union City will host South Fulton today at 5 p.m.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SOCCER

Martin 3, UC 0

 

Two late Martin goals secured a victory for the visitors.

Union City players Rylan Robinson and Braden Simpson “gave great all-around effort,” according to head coach Jason Deem. Silverio Acevedo also drew favorable words from Deem for his play on the defensive end.

Simpson got off the Tornadoes’ lone shot on goal, and Eric Lopez had three saves.

Union City fell to 0-4 and will play Martin again Thursday in Martin.
