UT Martin Track Teams Post Strong Performances at Separate Events

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin track and field programs traveled to two meets over the weekend, competing in the both the Joe Walker Invite (hosted by Ole Miss) and Bill Cornell Invite (hosted by Southern Illinois).

Highlighting some of the individual performances were a pair of event victories by junior field standout Darius Holland at the Bill Cornell Invite in both the men’s long jump and triple jump. Additionally, sophomore Sam Shuman set a new program record in the men’s 3k steeple at the Joe Walker Invite.

Joe Walker Invite Highlights

  • Sophomore Sam Shuman set a new school record with a third-place performance in the men’s 3000m steeple on Friday afternoon. His time of 9:08.63 broke his own program benchmark by nearly 15 seconds.
  • Graduate Luke McNair placed ninth overall in the men’s 1500m invite with a time of 3:51.65. His mark set a new PR for the veteran distance runner.
  • Junior Cole Davis competed in the men’s 1500m and came away with a fourth-place finish and a new PR with a time of 3:54.43.
  • Junior Lilia Alvarez competed in the women’s 1500m and ran to a new PR with a time of 4:49.52.

Bill Cornell Invite Highlights

  • Darius Holland won both the men’s long jump and triple jump titles at the Bill Cornel Invite. Holland posted his best mark of the meet on his fifth attempt with a distance of 7.38m. Then in the triple jump, he won the meet on his final attempt with a leap of 14.01m.
  • Freshman Ja’Kobe Ward posted a third-place finish in the men’s 100m dash on Saturday with a time of 10.76 seconds to set a new PR.
  • Freshman two-sport athlete Anaya Brown set a new PR in the women’s 400m with a time of 59.66 seconds.

UT Martin will return to the track on Saturday, April 15 when competing in the Cougar Classic hosted by SIUE.
