Henry County, Tenn.–Henry County Mayor John Penn Ridgeway and Henry County Solid Waste Director Ron Watkins have announced that some 200 customers of Halls Waste Management will have their trash pickup service discontinued as a result of Republic Services’ move to start enforcing their exclusive rights under the county’s current contract for garbage collection. Halls Waste Management is based in Calloway County, Ky.

In a press release, Ridgeway and Watkins said they learned Wednesday of a letter that had been sent to Halls’ customers in Henry County, saying their service would end on October 31. The letter adds Halls had been notified of the Henry County contract which gives Republic Services the exclusive rights to be the sole provider of residential waste management services in the unincorporated areas of Henry County.

Mayor Ridgeway said, “In over twenty-five years no provider has ever chosen to enforce the exclusive rights of the contract until recently, when a new general manager was named for Republic Services in Mayfield, KY. The county regretfully has to inform customers previously served by Hall’s Waste Management Service they will no longer be served by them due to Republic’s choice to enforce contract exclusive terms.”

Watkins said, “Henry County is required by state law to provide garbage service to the residents of the county. Henry County contracted with Barker Brothers back in the nineties and has continued contracts with Republic Services after they bought the Barker Brothers business. For several years now, Republic has been the only company willing to provide waste collection services to the entire county.”

Republic Services serves some 2300 residents in the county and currently charging $19.25 per month with a 4% rate adjustment expected July 2024. The present contract will expire June 2025. Any one wishing to speak with Republic regarding their loss of service or to obtain new service can contact the McKenzie office at 731-352-0413.
