Union City, Tenn.–The Union City football team has really cleaned up on the road this season.
And it has nothing to do with the Golden Tornadoes’ 5-1 record away from War Memorial Stadium.
UCHS freshmen and sophomores began a practice of picking up trash from the visitors’ stands following games after the team’s second road contest this season at Gleason.
The idea came from Tornado defensive coordinator Wade Maddox, who addressed the team following a 48-8 victory over the Bulldogs and encouraged players to “leave this place as good or better than you found it.”
Maddox said he was prompted after reading a book by college basketball coaching legend John Wooden, who was found to be sweeping his practice gymnasium one day and taking pride in the task.
“Staying modest. Helping others. Just being good people,” Maddox replied when asked the message he wanted to convey with the act. “Doing something they’re not paid for, and doing a good deed when nobody much is looking builds character.
“It not only shows respect for other school’s facilities and property, but it also allows us to appreciate what we have at Union City Schools.”
UC will play on the road again this week in the Class 1A quarterfinals at Dresden.
