Robot Art Challenge Pays Off For UC Students

uc-coding

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Union City, Tenn.–The payoff for putting lessons learned to good use in Dan Burnham’s Coding I class was a good one.

Nevaeh Johnson won a cash prize in a competition where Burnham’s Union City High School students were challenged to use school-issued Finch robots to draw geometrical shapes to scale.

Students were given poster board and pens to draw and then replicate the square-in-a-square design. Burnham challenged them to figure out the proper measurements to finish the assignment.

The class used a software program that converted inches to centimeters for the project.

The next step for Burnham and his students will be to write the actual code itself and figure out the math behind it for the exercise – a task on tap for the second half of the 2023-24 school year.
