Death Toll From Winter Storm Fern Continues To Rise

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency released its latest winter storm recovery report on Wednesday night, which shows that the weather-related death toll continues to climb.
In Wednesday night’s report, the Tennessee Department of Health confirmed four more deaths related to the winter storm that hit Tennessee on January 23, 2026.
That weekend’s storm now has a new death toll of 29, with fatalities reported in the following counties:
• Six fatalities in Shelby
• Three fatalities in Davidson
• Three fatalities in Knox
• Two fatalities in Fayette
• Two fatalities in Hardin
• Two fatalities in Hawkins
• Two fatalities in Henderson
• Two fatalities in Hickman
• Two fatalities in Obion
• One fatality in Cheatham
• One fatality in Dyer
• One fatality in Hancock
• One fatality in Haywood
• One fatality in Johnson
The first winter storm brought snow and freezing rain to West and Middle Tennessee. Those elements then froze in the following temperatures with subzero wind chills, causing widespread tree damage and dangerously slick roadways across the state.
At one point, more than 300,000 Tennesseans were without power, and 230,000 of them were just from the greater Nashville area.
