Historic Portrait Unveiling Ceremony to Celebrate America’s 250 Anniversary
The John Babb Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Henry County Historical Society will host a special Portrait Unveiling Ceremony on Monday, April 20, 3:00 p.m. in the Chancery Courtroom, Henry County Courthouse,
This commemorative event marks the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States and will feature the presentation of six portraits of historically significant figures, generously donated for permanent display in the courthouse.
Stephanie Routon Tayloe has donated original oil paintings of President Andrew Jackson, Rachel Jackson, President James K. Polk and Sarah Polk. Ms. Tayloe’s maternal family has historical ties to both the Jackson and Polk families. The portraits were painted by Joe Routon, a third generation portrait artist, and have been displayed in Ms. Tayloe’s homes for more than forty years. In her words, “It is time to share.”
In addition, the Henry County Historical Society has commissioned a portrait of President George Washington, which will be prominently displayed above the fireplace in the Chancery Courtroom. Nearby, a portrait of Washington’s close friend and Revolutionary War hero, the Marquis de Lafayette, will be featured.
The ceremony will begin at 3:00 p.m. Following will be a reception in the Courthouse’s main hallway. Community members will be available to share insights about the portraits and the historical figures they represent, including Patrick Henry and Tennessee governors Porter, Rye, and Harris.
To further commemorate the occasion, the Henry County Mayor’s Office is enhancing the exhibit with newly installed gold framed plaques under each of the twelve portraits displayed throughout the Courthouse.
The public is invited to attend this meaningful celebration of American and Henry County history and heritage
Happy 250th Birthday, America!
