Union City, Tenn.–The Union City Messenger recently sponsored a school essay contest in conjunction with the events surrounding the funeral for U.S. Navy Lt. Richard C. “Tito” Lannom.

Students from Union City High School’s advanced placement history class, as well as Obion County Schools’ eighth-grade language arts classes, participated.

A total of $600 in cash prizes was awarded.

Messenger senior staff reporter Chris Menees (far left), also the newspaper’s Education Page editor, presented checks to the three UCHS winners, (continuing from left) Jonathan Ransom, who claimed first-place honors and a check for $150; Caleb Parker, second place and recipient of $100; and Kyle Herrell, third place and recipient of $50.

Lannom, a 1959 graduate of Union City High School, was a bombardier/navigator aboard a Navy A-6A when he disappeared March 1, 1968, over North Vietnam. His remains were identified last year.
