Semi Fire, Chain-Reaction Collisions On I-24

Benton, Ky.–Multiple agencies responded and Interstate 24 was shut down for four hours after a semi caught on fire which led to chain-reaction accidents Wednesday night in Marshall County.
The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office was called to respond to the 18-wheeler fire which resulted in the semi also leaking diesel fuel for a few miles along the highway, resulting in shutting down the eastbound lanes.
Meanwhile, westbound vehicles whose drivers were not paying attention or watching the fire began colliding. The westbound lane was limited to one lane for a time.
According to the Marshall County Emergency Management Agency, no serious injuries were reported.
Agencies responding in addition to the Marshall County sheriff’s office, EMA and EMS were the Possom Trot-Sharpe Fire Department, Palma Brienburg Fire Department, multiple wrecker companies, and Kentucky Dept of Transportation. The Marshall County EMA also thanked the local dispatch center for the job it did handing the phone and radio traffic.
